2025

2025 was not a good year for the country, and I bid it good riddance.  We learned that the President has unchecked power to do what he wishes and to abuse the Constitution whenever he wants.  We watched as a supine Congress became his lackey.  We heard one conspiracy theory after another and were agasht at those who believe them. It was a memorable year for all the wrong reasons and perhaps, a watershed for our democracy.  We have at least three more years of misdirection to experience.  May they not be as bad as 2025.

DEI

President Trump's mission to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion from the US has struck a nerve in the Netherlands. There, the decision to remove panels honoring the service of black soldiers during WWII from a US cemetery has sparked outrage and demands they be returned.  Could it be that citizens of the Netherlands are far less racist than the US?

A Pittance

US contributions to UN aid programs is only a pittance of what it once was.  The US is still the richest country in the world. Stiffing the poor and destitute is criminal.

Imperial?

Consider this article as you wish, but it sure looks like President Trump is a reigning king.

Forgotten?

Merry Christmas...  Sometimes it seems that the popes of the Roman Catholic Church are forgotten voices calling for peace and the dignity of man. They are lone figures preaching the word of God in a secular world that has moved far from religion. Then, there is this.  A crowd far too large to fit into the massive St. Peter's basilica. Some are listening although those in power might not be. It's heartening to see and a sign of hope for a world convulsed in war, famine and genocide.

Peace?

Zelenskyy has put out a 20-point peace plan, putting the ball in Putin's court.  What do you want to bet that Putin rejects it, especially since Russia has been slowly gaining ground? Putin is a thug and Trump a lackey for courting him.

Determined

President Trump is determined to be remembered by planting his name on everything.  Now it is the Trump class of warships.  His ego knows no bounds.  What do you want to bet that the next president will remove his name and get rid of the gold claptrap in the Oval Office?

Et Tu, 60 Minutes?

Has a gold standard of reporting gone soft on the Trump administration?

Revolt

The Speaker of the House has lost control of his Republicans over extension of ACA subsidies.  He now has to win them back over the holidays. It's not a good position to be in for the start of 2026.  What will it take to appease unhappy centrists?

Talk?

Can the President talk his way out of this?

What Now?

For a President who demands unthinking loyalty, what is he making of this?

Detestable

This is detestable, crude and uncalled for, especially from the President.  No wonder his fellow Republicans have criticized him for writing it.

Still Going

The Curiosity rover on Mars is still going and making new discoveries well past its expiration date.  It is a technological and PR triumph for NASA and the engineers who built it.  The US might be on the way down in some areas but not in space exploration.

Ready To Bolt

Stock markets are reaching new highs but investors are ready to bolt at the least sign of an economic downturn. They are nervous and that is for the better.  Complacent trading gets slammed when markets suddenly plunge. There is no way to tell what huge trading programs will do in fractions of a second. Markets are not for small traders, especially when sentiment is dictated by machines.  That is why it makes no sense that public sentiment is tied to indexes.

Symbolic

Sadly, the Nobel Peace Prize will do little to instigate regime change.  Maduro has bought off his generals. The prize is a symbol of frustrated dreaming.

Caving

Trump is caving and is a lickspittle for Putin. The loser is Ukraine and its hard-pressed citizens.  A pity and maddening.

The King

The king in his glory still can't stop himself from slandering his audience.  The Kennedy Center honors will never be the same.

More Power To The Executive Branch?

More power to the executive branch?  Back to winner-takes-all politics and the corruption they fostered.

Correction

The admiral said there was no "Kill them all" order in the alleged drug boat incident.  My apology to Hegseth.

Will It?

Will it make a difference?  In this administration probably not.

Despicable

To give an illegal command, which was carried out, then to blame the subordinate is despicable but that is what Hegseth has done.

Growing A Spine?

It looks like Congress might be growing a spine and beginning to stand up to Trump and his toady, Hegseth.
