Mashups and Activism
When I posted the article on mashups last week, I failed to give one reason why PR practitioners should be involved in them -- because activists are already using them. Here are mashups that make this point:
- Superfund site locator: http://www.terraims.com/webservices/superfund.php
- Cities with resolutions pending or passed to bring soldiers back from Iraq: http://www.lastingnews.com/maps/iraq_withdraw.php
- A database and map of Congressional travel: http://www.opensecrets.org/travel/
- A map of campaign contributions nationwide: http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~markane/i590/contributors.html
- A map of major oil spills around the earth: http://www.lastingnews.com/maps/oilspill.php
- A calculator and map of C02 emissions during air travel: http://www.terrapass.com/flight/flightcalc.html
While most of these are politically oriented, they don't have to be. Your organization could be next.
