This is a PR nightmare. Not only is Merck, the pharmaceutical giant reeling, from disclosures about the efficacy of its drug, Vioxx, but now the scientific community has turned on the company. It doesn't get much worse, and it will take years for Merck to win back its reputation, if it ever does.
