Hypocrisy
What the Republicans are doing to fill the Supreme Court seat left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg is hypocrisy at its most glaring, but what do they care? They have the power for now, and they are using it in a naked show of force. This raises the question about the merits of precedence, which they set when they denied Obama's pick for the court by refusing to vote on him. Power needn't be hamstrung by the past, and here it isn't. The PR outcome of such brutality is almost certain to be negative for all but the Republican's most enthusiastic supporters for whom might makes right. It is important to remember that in a Democracy voting blocs compete with one another for primacy. Right now, the right wing of the Republican party holds sway. It is at the ballot box where citizens register their feelings about the use of power. And, through protest. But, those who value power know protesters are usually weak. Chants and signs do not exert enough pressure for change. What is left for activists is a bitter memory of what happened and a vow never to let it occur again.
