The Fourth
As this article indicates, we live in extreme negatives and some positives. The country is divided and not in a good way. Lack of unity is over deep issues that still haven't been properly addressed since the Declaration of Independence. The President, who took office as a unifier, has stumbled and has a low approval rating. Citizens are still divided by systemic racism and economic disparity. The rich are doing OK: The rest are not. However, it is not a time for despair but for self-examination. Americans were smug about their superiority for decades. Now. they are being forced to confront a different world and many are afraid. They want to go back to days when the US could do no wrong, which, of course, was never true. We believed our own propaganda and founding myths. The message to "Make America Great Again" wants to turn back the clock, which can't be done. It is time to face the present and future and to create a new country to satisfy the aspirations of the Declaration.
