Apology

The pope has formally apologized to indigenous nations of Canada for abuse perpetrated by nuns, priests and brothers who ran residential schools that tried to assimilate indian children.  It was recognition that the government institutions were wrongheaded, narrow minded and dismissive of native culture.  It also was another blow to the moral stature of the Catholic Church.  This pope has angered those who believe the Church can do no wrong.  But, Catholics are human and the pope is sending a message that Catholics can and do sin.  It is a difficult message for a public that wants black and white answers.  Gray zone communications are unsatisfying.  The Church's image has and will continue to take hits for its failures and Catholics will remain on the defensive.
