No Contradiction
Russian officials are saying there is no contradiction between annexation of Ukraine lands and retreat from those same territories. They know how to square a circle. They are alluding to a desire to win those properties back with a call-up of troops and more abundant armament. This is the danger Ukraine faces as it stretches its forces thinly across the newly acquired territory. Words matter and Russia's words indicate a prolonged and grinding conflict that will last through the winter and into next year. Russia is aiming to exhaust Ukraine of men and equipment and then take over. Ukraine, for its part, must continue to show a fighting spirit even as the war continues. It is a hard, hard road for the country and Zelenskyy's words of encouragement are needed more than ever.
